The Bushnell has announced that the hip-hop musical sensation “Hamilton” will be playing that historic Hartford venue Dec. 11 to 30 as part of the show’s national tour.

We don’t yet know when the tickets will go on sale. We don’t even know what they will cost.

But all anyone really wants to know is how can they get their hands on a ticket (or two) to see the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning Broadway behemoth.

Well, it’s complicated.

To quote lyrics from the show’s song “What Comes Next?”: “Do you have a clue what happens now?”

Reaching for an American Revolution metaphor, the fight to win Hamilton tickets now seems closer to being the battles of Lexington and Concord than it is to being Saratoga or Yorktown. We know the direction things are going in, but there’s a lot that simply isn’t known yet.

Here’s how to ready yourself for the charge. The information comes from useful FAQ sheets provided by The Bushnell and producers of “Hamilton,” as well as a Tuesday morning phone interview with Bushnell Communications Manager Paul Marte.

Sign Up For The Bushnell’s

‘E-Club’ Newsletter

The Bushnell sends out e-blasts to everyone on its e-club mailing list with information about upcoming shows. This includes the dates when tickets go on sale. Signing up for the email updates is free: Go to bushnell.org and click the button at the bottom right of the homepage that says “Join E-mail List.” The Bushnell also has a presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and will post “Hamilton” info there as well.

Be A Current Bushnell Subscriber

“Hamilton” is on the 2018-19 Bushnell Broadway series season. Subscribers to the current 2017-18 season who renew their subscriptions are the only people currently assured of “Hamilton” seats. But even those lucky subscribers may be disappointed to learn that, unlike with most shows on the Broadway series, there will be no special opportunity for subscribers to buy extra seats to “Hamilton” beyond their already existing subscription tickets.

Only subscribers to the full Broadway Series will have “Hamilton” in their subscription package. Mini-subscriptions or other packages do not include “Hamilton.”

You’ll find the rest of the 2018-19 Broadway Series here.

Then Cross Your Fingers

There are still possibilities to become a subscriber to the 2018-19 Bushnell season, but they’re not guaranteed. If new subscription packages are released, the demand will likely exceed the number available. The Bushnell is planning to prioritize new subscribers based on whether they have already made a financial donation to the theater (which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to encouraging “public appreciation of music, art…and other public activities”).

Under this plan, “new subscribers will be taken in priority of donation level,” Marte says. “A new subscriber will have to be a donor.” For details about making donations to The Bushnell, click the “Make a Donation” button on the Bushnell homepage or call the theater at 860-987-5900 for details.

Wait For Single Ticket Sales

“Hamilton”‘s producers insist that half of all the tickets for each stop on the show’s tour are available to the general public. In Hartford’s case, that would mean around 32,000 tickets. (The other half are mostly taken by subscribers and potential new subscribers.) So there’s a good chance you can get a ticket. Single tickets aren’t on sale yet, and the exact date when they will be will not be announced for months now. The Bushnell expects that tickets will go on sale in late summer or early fall. They may not be able to announce the ticket sale date until a day or two before it happens, so keep an eye on those Bushnell “e-club” email blasts.

Whenever tickets do go on sale, expect them all to sell out within the space of an hour or two, if not minutes. No time to hem and haw.

The Bushnell emphasizes that it is the only authorized ticket dealer for the show’s Hartford engagement. According to the theater’s FAQ sheet, “ticket buyers who purchase tickets from a ticket broker or any third party should be aware that The Bushnell is unable to reprint or replace lost or stolen tickets and is unable to contact patrons with information regarding time changes or other pertinent updates regarding the performance.”

Play The ‘Hamilton’ Lottery

Everywhere “Hamilton” plays, a bunch of tickets for each performance are distributed through an online lottery. This won’t happen in Hartford until the show is in town in December. You enter the lottery in the morning, on the day before the show that the tickets are for.

If your name is picked, you have several hours to claim the tickets, at a bargain price; lottery-won tickets for a current tour stop in Seattle are going for a mere $10. The entire process takes place online, via the official “Hamilton” app.

If You Can’t Snag A Ticket Here…

There are two concurrent tours of “Hamilton” crossing the country right now, dubbed the “Philip” and “Angelica” tours (named for two characters in the show). Hartford is getting the “Angelica” tour. This is the same tour that is now in Denver and will be in Boston in September and in Providence in July 2019, among many other stops. But those markets are likely to be as tough as anywhere. You’ll find tickets and tour dates here.

A list of the “Angelica” tour’s current cast is posted at the hamiltonmusical.com website. This includes Austin Scott as Alexander Hamilton, Julia K. Harriman as Eliza Hamilton, Nicholas Christopher as Aaron Burr, Sabrina Sloan as Angelica Schuyler, Chris De’Sean Lee as Maquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Isaiah Johnson as George Washington and Peter Matthew Smith as King George. Some members of that cast may change in the 10 months before “Hamilton” hits Hartford.

You can catch a complete different cast of “Hamilton” on the “Philip” tour (which is mostly on the West Coast) or at one of the show’s open-ended runs in Chicago and London and of course Broadway. Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced he will star in a three-week run of “Hamilton” in Puerto Rico in January 2019.

What You Don’t Need To Worry About

Standing in line: Getting a ticket need not involve waiting outside the Bushnell’s box office on Capitol Avenue. At this point, The Bushnell hasn’t even decided if they will have regular box office sales at all; they may just do everything online. The ticket lottery is also run online, through the official “Hamilton” app.

Getting the best or worst deal: There are no group sales or discounts for “Hamilton” tickets. That’s true of every market that “Hamilton” plays in. The only exception is those inexpensive tickets you get to buy if you happen to win the lottery.

That’s everything we know about “Hamilton” in Hartford thus far. It’s considerably fewer than “Ten Things You Need to Know” about American history that get recited at the end of “Hamilton.” But it’s plenty. Good luck.
