Some of the hardest working members of a police force don’t get paid in money. They are the canine members of the force.

Special Officer Hector Dones, of the Hartford Police Department, said, “The K9 unit is very important to the police force.”  Hector said German Shepards are commonly used as police dogs. The K9s are normally use to protect specific personnel, search for criminals, help search and rescue missing people, search for drugs and to help do other important jobs in the police force. Police dogs are also used to intimidate criminals from trying to escape from the police. Depending on what their specific jobs are, there are usually different titles used for a K9 dog.

Special Officer Hector Dones said, “Some police dogs are known as Arson dogs because they are used to trace and pick-up accelerants at suspected sites.” Cadaver dogs are trained to detect the odor of possible decomposed bodies. The dogs used for this specific job have noses that are so sensitive, that they are able to smell a decomposed body even if it is under water.

The dogs are protected by wearing ballistic vests. They are treated as any other member of the police force, and an assault on a police dog, would be treated as if it was an assault on a police officer.

Hartford Schools Special Officer Dones works closely with the Hartford Police Department K-9 Unit.  He has been raising money to provide the dogs with vests for extra protection when they respond to calls.
