The aging process can be frightening for some and can also be stressful. However, citizens of Connecticut are living their lives worry-free by taking Pilates classes at the South WindsorCommunity Center.
Exercise and fitness sessions were offered to any senior citizen regardless of previous experience and the participants feel comfortable working with others in their age group. Daria Plummer, 68, says that the classes are beneficial in many ways. “There are healthy benefits, not just for the body, but for the mind and soul. More people should take advantage of it. I have gained more body strength through Pilates. Over the years, I have to tell you, my whole total health has improved.”
Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps build flexibility and long, lean muscles, while developing endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment. Participants practice their breathing to relieve stress and allow sufficient oxygen flow to muscles, developing a strong core or center. Pilates tones abdominals while strengthening the back and improving coordination.
The South Windsor Community Center offers these classes, as well as many others. However, this session was specifically designed for senior citizens to ensure that they are not over-worked, but are still getting a great workout.
"As a senior, I could take classes elsewhere. However, coming here, to my own community center, the classes are geared toward people of my age bracket. They are concerned about what seniors need to be more flexible, to have greater balance, body strength and bone density," Plummer says.
Not only that, but Plummer believes that those who are a part of the community truly care about each other. People work together to ensure that every citizen, regardless of age, enjoy living in South Windsor. "It's wonderful to see some community members who really are in need of a safe haven. For some people, this is their only outlet. South Windsor is known as a caring community. The past few years, I have been actively involved. I have seen the benefits. The healthy benefits, not just for the body, but for the mind and soul."
