On December 7, 2012 at Jerome Harrison Elementary School in North Branford, families contributed goods for the Night to Care. The Night to Care is sponsored by Matt’s Mission, founded by Lynn Riorden and lead by Chair of the event, Jackie Rodriguez. This fundraiser supports North Branford families in need of a little extra help during the holidays.
“I love this event. I don’t like the idea of people being hungry,” Lynn Riorden said.
Many canned goods and nonperishable food items were collected.Toys, trucks, dolls, and stuffed animals were also allocated. Gifts were stored at Stanley T. Williams School and were then transported to Jerome Harrison for the night of the event.
Regardless of age, people came out to help the community. Students from the high school also assisted in “playing Santa” by packing the boxes in the truck for the final distribution from Helping Hands and Interact. Parents additionally helped with the food and gift drive.
“It’s a really great cause,” Lynn Riorden told us.
As the ceremony came to a close, spirits were lifted as the JHS students performed Christmas and holiday carols. Many hearts were warmed with the feeling of holiday cheer. Not only was the abundance of support appreciated by those in need, but also by those who helped during the time of giving.
