"Thriller" released

The album won a record-breaking eight <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="EVHST000012" title="Grammy Awards" href="/topic/entertainment/music/grammy-awards-EVHST000012.topic">Grammy Awards</a> and became the best-selling album of all time. Videos for the songs "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" were popular on <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP000011576" title="MTV  (tv network)" href="/topic/business/media-industry/television-industry/mtv--%28tv-network%29-ORCRP000011576.topic">MTV</a>, which had launched just a year earlier.  John Landis directed the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA"><span style="color:#2262CC">14-minute video</span></a> for the title song, "Thriller."  When it aired, MTV ran it twice an hour to meet demand.
